Why Kirstin chose UCSD’s Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate Program

I decided to enroll in the UC San Diego Extension Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Professional Certificate program for a few reasons. First, I have been considering teaching English abroad since my freshman year of university studies. Over the course of my studies, I met people who taught abroad for a gap year. To me, teaching English abroad seems like a great way to learn about another culture, travel, and experience living in another country. Since these are my interests, I decided to pursue the TEFL certificate.

I decided to pursue UC San Diego’s Extension TEFL certificate for two reasons. The main reason is that I am an undergraduate student at UCSD; this gives me access to financial assistance programs for UCSD Extension classes, such as Student Vouchers and the Launch Program. Also, I have heard that the UCSD Extension TEFL program is very rigorous compared to other TEFL programs. I have heard some of the ESL teachers at Extension who took this TEFL program say that it prepared them much better than the TESOL Master’s programs they took at other universities.

So far I have taken 2 TEFL classes, and I thought the teachers were great.  I plan to finish my certificate in December.
